Everyone wants a bright and beautiful smile, but some people may feel their gums are too noticeable. A gummy smile is one where the gums seem too large compared to the scale of the teeth. Excessive gum tissue can cause dental problems, or it could be a cosmetic issue only. A gingivectomy offers a solution regardless of the cause. The latest laser treatment can boost the patient's appearance and improve their dental health without the concerns and recovery associated with traditional dental surgery.

What is a Gingivectomy?

In the dental field, the gums are called gingiva. A gingivectomy removes some of the gum tissue to reveal the teeth better. The process reduces the appearance of a gummy smile. Gingivectomies also help with the treatment of gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums. Though not dangerous to the teeth, the bacteria and plaque that cause gingivitis can lead to periodontitis. Periodontitis is a more serious concern that can cause gum infections and increases the risk of tooth loss.

A gingivectomy treatment removes damaged and excessive tissue and closes the gaps in the gums by the teeth. The process provides an instant cosmetic boost as it reveals more of the tooth for a more attractive smile. Gingivectomies also make it easier to access more of each tooth for a more thorough cleaning. Closing the gaps in the teeth helps to prevent bacteria from entering the gum. Surgical options are not the only treatment available today. A gingivectomy can perform the same tasks efficiently and safely.

Gingivectomy treatments also help dentists treat impacted teeth without surgery. The laser removes the gum covering the tooth and causing the impaction. Once the excess gum tissue is out of the way, the tooth beneath is accessible for the dentist to repair. Repair is not always necessary. The removal of the impaction can also allow the tooth to erupt normally before any damage occurs.

Why is Laser Gingivectomy Better?

Invasive treatments always include some risks. Patients that choose surgical techniques may have more pain, a longer recovery time, and the risk of after-surgery infections. Laser dental treatments reduce these risks and are fast and safe. The use of lasers may even help people to heal faster following their treatment.

The preciseness of lasers also benefits the patient. Many periodontists are exceptionally skilled in using scalpels during surgical procedures. Laser technology, however, allows much more control and precise cuts than any manual tool. The differences are minimal but often improve the final appearance. More precise cuts also lead to faster healing that needs to take place. Lasers also help to lessen bleeding compared to scalpels. The reduction of bleeding makes it easier for the periodontist to see the area easier for improved speed of treatment with more accuracy. Dr. Stephanie Sfiroudis is the first periodontist in Nassau County to offer LAPIP and LANAP treatments to patients.

How Laser Gingivectomy Works

Gingivectomy procedures can take as little as 30 minutes or longer based on the amount of tissue treated. Reshaping the gums around multiple teeth or removing a large amount of tissue may take several appointments. Periodontists typically prefer for the gums to heal fully before additional work begins. It is necessary for the swelling to subside completely to see how much extra gum remains around the teeth. If another gingivectomy occurs too soon, it is possible to remove more tissue than needed or to experience more pain and bleeding than would otherwise occur.

The process of a gingivectomy begins with the use of a local anesthetic applied to the treatment area. A periodontal probe enters the gum pockets and measures the amount of gum around the teeth to determine the amount of tissue removal needed. The periodontist uses a laser next to cut away the tissue identified for removal by the probe.

The change in the appearance is noticeable immediately after the treatment. More improvement may take place as any residual redness or swelling of the gums subsides. The pain level after treatment and during the healing process is generally treatable with an over-the-counter pain reliever. Once the gums heal, the periodontist will schedule a follow-up exam to determine if the patient needs (or wants) more tissue removed.

"I was around 12 when I realized my smile looked weird. I hated how small my teeth looked, and how the littlest smile would reveal so much of my gums. I developed the habit of covering my mouth when laughing and keeping my mouth closed when smiling. I never realized there was a way to fix it until I finally made a comment to my dentist during a routine cleaning.

Imagine my surprise to learn there was a dental treatment just for my type of problem. The laser gingivectomy has made me feel like a different person. I love to smile now, and I am amazed at how much more confidence I have. The appointment was pretty quick, and the pain was so minimal afterward I didn't even need to take anything for it. Thanks again, Dr. Sfiroudis and team!"
