The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons states that, of people aged 35-44, about 69 percent have at least one tooth missing. In the United States, approximately 30 million people have lost all the teeth in at least one jaw. Millions of these individuals have turned to dental implants because, for them, it is a more stable and permanent solution than dentures. Implant dentistry continues to improve on its already reliable product with newer techniques and materials. Many patients today choose ceramic implants instead of traditional titanium because of their increased benefits.

What are Ceramic Implants?

The dental industry introduced dental implants in about 1965. The replacement teeth were only available in titanium. The option of ceramic implants has been on the market for over 20 years. The process of implant installation and the upgraded implant material have been tested and proven safe. Ceramic implants enable patients to choose this form of tooth replacement despite an allergy or sensitivity to titanium. People without allergies may also choose ceramic if they prefer to keep their bodies metal-free.

Ceramic implants are zirconium oxide, a product valued for its durability and strength. Known for withstanding pressure without cracking and tolerating high temperatures, it produces a reliable dental material. The safety and reliability of zirconium oxide have made it a common material for many medical uses. Dental patients can feel comfortable with this product in their bodies.

Why Ceramic Works Better

Titanium implants can irritate the mouth tissue of patients that have an undiagnosed sensitivity to metal. One condition, commonly known as Burning Mouth Syndrome, can cause a sensation of burning throughout the mouth with no identifiable cause. Some studies suggest that metal, like implants or fillings, could cause this condition for some patients. People with titanium implants may also have discomfort when consuming hot foods or beverages, as the metal can retain and spread the heat. Ceramic implants are not associated with these problems.

Ceramic implants are pearly white like natural teeth and roots. The implanted posts are also white, so there is no risk of metal showing through the gums. Titanium posts sometimes become visible as a dark ring at the gum line. The visibility is most likely in patients with thin or receding gums.

The repair of a cracked or damaged ceramic tooth can happen in the mouth as a natural tooth repair would occur. It is not necessary to remove and replace the tooth as other implants may require. This benefit could help people to save money on the care of their teeth over time.

Titanium implants can also suffer from corrosion and release ions into the body. The ions released in the body can lead to increased cytokine levels resulting in inflammation and immune system responses. The result, for some, could be bone loss around the site of a dental implant.

Benefits of Ceramic Implants

As mentioned previously, ceramic implants are less likely to cause an allergic reaction or irritate the mouth than metal. Ceramic also offers a shine and color that more closely matches the look of natural teeth. It is more comfortable for people with ceramic implants to consume hot foods and drinks because ceramic will not transfer heat like a metal. Ceramic dental implants also offer a more precise implantation process because the tooth and post are one piece instead of two or three, like the titanium alternative.

Ceramic is a biocompatible option because it works well with bone tissue. The tissue can attach to the ceramic and form a bond, keeping the implant in place. Ceramic does not irritate the gums as much as titanium can in certain patients. Holistic care dentists often prefer their patients receive ceramic rather than titanium because it is unlikely to lead to health concerns.

Ceramic implants were much more costly than titanium when they initially arrived on the market. The prices today have become more competitive. The many benefits of ceramic make them a worthwhile investment. The implants last as long as titanium, or for about 15-20 years. Dental patients may even have their implants last longer with excellent home care and regular dental visits.

Patient Testimonials

“I just absolutely love that I don't have to deal with any dental insurance forms when I see Dr. Sfiroudis. The office calls and works with my insurance company to make sure all my periodontal services are covered, and they tell me in advance what my co-pay will be, and if I have any out-of-pocket expense, which rarely happens, and if it does, the cost is minimal. In the past,

I've had trouble with surprise bills for services that weren't fully covered from other Periodontists, and I'm happy to say I've never had the same problem in the three years I've been seeing Dr. Sfiroudis.”
