Gum disease causes more tooth loss for Americans than any other dental-related issue. Approximately 4–12 percent of adults in the United States between the ages of 18-64 have periodontal disease. The prevalence increases as people age and stabilizes around 11 percent after about age 65. Prompt treatment of gum disease can preserve the teeth and keep bacteria under control. Today, dental surgery does not need to mean invasive or painful methods. Laser surgery offers a safe and fast solution for any dental patient with periodontal disease.

What is Laser Gum Surgery?

The surgery utilizes Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) technology. It treats periodontal disease caused by a buildup of natural plaque and bacteria on the teeth. The bacteria form a sticky layer over the teeth that can harden into plaque. If not removed adequately, the plaque can prevent adequate cleaning of the teeth. As plaque builds under the gum, it causes irritation, inflammation, and redness. The affected gums can become too infected to treat by brushing the teeth or undergoing a basic cleaning at a dental office. Gum disease usually requires surgery and a deep pocket cleaning.

The LANAP process is the best choice for most patients because it gently removes diseased tissue without harming the teeth or any healthy tissue in the area. Deep cleaning of the teeth takes place before the laser forms fibrin clots to stop bleeding. It then seals the tissue to reduce infection risk and speed healing. The surgery is fast, less painful than surgery using a scalpel, and more precise. Dr. Stephanie Sfiroudis is the first periodontist in Nassau County to offer LAPIP and LANAP treatments to patients.

Why Lasers Works Best

Deep cleaning to treat gum disease is not a new process, but the use of lasers to perform the surgery is a change from traditional methods. The updated services have many benefits for the patient. Most people will heal and recover in much less time than they would with surgical procedures that use a scalpel. A local anesthetic is generally all that people need rather than general anesthesia.

More preservation of healthy tissue occurs with LANAP surgery because of the preciseness of the laser used for the treatment. The reduced blood loss during laser dental surgery also helps the periodontist to perform tissue removal more effectively. Faster healing times and the absence of a need for sutures lowers the risk of infection during recovery. Healing also takes less time because the laser kills the bacteria in the mouth. Most patients will experience much less discomfort as their mouth heals.

How Laser Surgery Works

The first step of laser gum surgery is the application of a local anesthetic over the treatment area. The periodontist uses a specialized laser that pulses and removes any inflamed tissue around the root. Scaling takes place after the dentist accesses the tooth below the gum line. Scaling removes any plaque and bacteria above and below the gum line. The periodontist washes away any remaining roughness from hardened plaque is to eliminate the inflammation in the gums.

After the periodontist finishes scaling the teeth, they then plane (smooth) the roots of the tooth. Smoothing the roots allows the gums to heal around the tooth faster and more completely. Patients will need to pay special attention to the cleanliness of their mouth over the days and weeks following their treatment. Cleaning properly lowers the number of bacteria in the mouth and reduces the risk of infection. A cleaner mouth allows the gums to heal completely in less time.

Dr. Sfiroudis may recommend an antibiotic or antiseptic mouth rinse to help with the healing process. Patients will need to clean the teeth using a rinse as they heal. Cleaning the teeth must be gentle to avoid disturbing the clots formed by the laser. Most periodontists will have patients avoid brushing for a few days to prevent damage to the temporarily delicate area. Plan for a follow-up visit after the treatment so the periodontist can make sure the gums have healed properly and no infection or inflammation remains.

Schedule a Consultation

Periodontal disease can cause red, tender gums that look swollen and bleed when brushing the teeth. A periodontist can diagnose the condition after a dental exam and determine the best course of treatment. Some people can reverse the problem with better oral care and dietary changes before they develop gum disease.

Dr. Stephanie Sfiroudis offers consultations for patients who think they have gum disease or those diagnosed with the condition but seeking an alternative to invasive surgery. The initial consultations are free and can help people to learn more about how laser treatments work.

"After I quit smoking, I decided to find out how much damage there was to my teeth. I had prepared myself for the idea that at least two of my teeth would need to come out because they were in such bad shape.

LANAP treatments were a lifesaver (or at least a tooth-saver). The deep cleaning helped heal my gums, and my teeth are more stable and comfortable than before. The Emdogain treatments I received even helped with bone growth in the most damaged areas. "
